“Inspired by the beauty of my environment, of its natural and living elements, and by everything that surrounds me daily, I chose to recapture the playgrounds of my childhood in order to share and pay tribute to this infinite universe. Water, white geese, the St. Lawrence River and its shore are powerful sources of inspiration, from which I draw the energy, the strength and the courage humbly embodied in my artistic approach. I live, I love, I dance, under open skies.”
In 2001, after being invited to replace a dancer for a duet performance at La Rotonde in Quebec City, Caron rediscovers interpretation. She is awarded a first advanced training personal grant in 2002. In 2006, she founds Fleuve | Espace danse. Upon recommendation of the CALQ, the company asks for, and receives, an annual operating grant. The same year, she choreographs a solo, “La mémoire de l’eau”, which she is invited to perform at La Rotonde (Quebec City) and at Tangente (Montreal).
Long before the foundation of Fleuve | Espace danse, Caron had created and produced several choreographic works, both indoors and outdoors. Every year since 1993 in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, performances take place outside, merging into the village’s life, from the church’s front square, to the streets, parks and gardens, the dock, sandbanks and shores… This in situ work was conceived for and based on an immediate environment. Locals and many tourists have had the chance to see dance works created in the public space. Ever since, À ciel ouvert | Danser sur l’infini de l’horizon, an open-air event taking place every August in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, is eagerly awaited.
Since its foundation in 2006, the 10 most striking creations have been:
- La Mémoire de l’eau, 2006
- La Baigneuse, 2006
- La baigneuse, un homme et quatre loups venus de la mer, 2007
- La Noce Opus I, 2008
- La plage écarlate, 2009
- 1.2.3. les pieds dans l’eau, 2010
- La Noce Opus III, 2010
- Comme une odeur de varech, 2011
- île des ailes, 2012
- 73° nord, 2011-2012
While still incorporating elements of her primary inspiration, birds and nature’s energy, Caron’s body language signature keeps evolving into a more refined form. Devoting increasingly more time to creation, the choreographer is deepening her approach and constantly pushing back limits…
Before the foundation of Fleuve | Espace danse…
Caron’s approach is intimately tied to her roots. Born and raised with both feet in water, she danced and built her imaginary world on the shore since she was four. There was no available dance education near her village, so she began studying dance when she moved to Montreal at 19 years old. A few years later, she chose to go back down the stream to set her creative space in her hometown, three hours and a half east of Montreal.
Desirous to provide what had missed to her childhood, she founds her own dance school in 1986, l’École de danse Chantal Caron, now reputed for the rigor and the quality of its education. In 1992, she founds les Productions Caron Danse (NPO) to diffuse and promote the art of dancing with her students. Les Productions distinguish themselves in Egypt, Honduras and Canada.
In 2011, L’École de danse Chantal Caron was celebrating its 25th anniversary. At the school, Chantal is currently a teacher, producer, business woman, and choreographer. She was honored many times for her involvement, both with the arts and her community.
